My great friend Mya Shrieves told me a joke. It goes like this:
“What do you call a Mexican when he loses his car?”
“What”
“Car-los”
Mya told her parents this joke and basically she didn’t get the best response. What they said was that it was racist. Mya didn't mean for it to be racist and she got a whole lecture. When I got told this joke I didn’t see it as being racist, but now I don't know what to think because because I see and understand both sides of the argument. But I did ask a couple of people what their opinion was on the joke. I decided to ask a Latino student to see if he got offended by the joke, Dante Borsari.
When I asked Dante this joke his response was, “It’s not offensive, but its just a bad joke.”
Dante is Mexican-American and he wasn’t offended by it so, the question is…..Is this really a racist joke.
I don’t know at this point. So I decided to ask a student who is not Latina, Nalani Washington.
When I asked Ms. Washington her response was, “I love that dad joke but I think it's racist.”
I asked a few more people and the average answer was “No”.
But I did come across one eight grader, Nick Faino. His thoughts on this joke was very different from others.
He responded with, “Yea... that's a bad joke that is racist.”
It shocked me because when I was having a conversation with him before, he said that he finds lots of jokes very funny. So when I told him this joke, he gave me a very surprising reaction. But everyone has their own opinion, What’s your opinion on this joke?
