Winter break is coming up, and everyone is ecstatic over it. The thoughts of warm Christmas cookies and presents are wafting through everyone's head. The holiday spirit is all around, every store you walk into is stuffed full of Christmas-themed decor. Santa is EVERYWHERE. In the mall, in the streets, in the most recent Christmas horror movie, etc:
But if you walk into the back of the store, you might get lucky and find some plastic menorahs (A candle holder with nine branches) and little bags of expired gelt (chocolate coins with gold colored foil).
Chanukah (also called Hanukkah) is the Festival of Lights. To be exact, it’s an 8-day long Jewish festival/holiday celebrating the Maccabees standing up against their Greek/Syrian oppressors. The whole 8-day candle thing came from the Chanukah “Miracle.” During the revolution, The Jewish people had a candle that only had enough oil to burn for one more day. However, the candle mysteriously held for eight days more.
Chanukah is a holiday that should be just as recognized as Christmas, as it holds an equal amount of importance to the two religions. Next time you’re about to say “Merry Christmas,” maybe add in a “Happy Chanukah!”
