“Birds of Prey (and the fantabulous emancipation of one Harley Quinn)” is one of the best comic book movies that DC has put out in recent years. It is directed by Cathy Yan. The movie follows Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) leaving the Joker (Jarad Leto... Sort of). She decides that she would let him go by destroying where they were both created. She blows up Ace Chemicals. She meets with Roman Sionis/Black Mask (Ewan Mcgregor), Victor Zsasz (Chris Messena), and Dinah Lance/Black Canary (Journey Smollet-Bell). Roman wants a diamond that comes from the same family as the Crossbow Killer\Huntress (Mary Elizebeth Winsted). They go on a very bloody and violent adventure that is just a great time.
The DC universe has had a mixed bag of movies, from Shazam and Wonder Woman to Batman Vs Superman and Justice League this finds the balance of dark and comedic. A couple of reviews from multiple sources say that it is “Deadpool with a bit of Taurantino” and it is true. Another reason the movie is great is that it is very unreliable. Harley Quinn is telling the story how she thinks it went and we know it isn’t all true because she is crazy and she does a lot of backtracking.
The character development in the movie is done very well and that is because the DC universe just threw these new characters in and that could have been really bad but because the movie was done well, so was this. The movie was done in a way in which the characters could be brought back in a sequel and possibly more. There were a lot of easter eggs throughout the movie that want to make you watch more which is a very good thing.
There are some things that I did not like about the movie as a whole. I think that this is kind of funny, but the entirety of the movie is happening loosely because of an egg sandwich. She gets mad at a cop because she dropped it and throughout the entire movie she wanted it. It was easy to get over but just a weird thing to have in there. The movies writing was great but it was all framilier. It was not an original movie and could have been better. I had read that there was an end credit scene before I saw it and it was very much not worth waiting. Harley starts talking about Batman and it cuts out.
Was it worth it? Yes. It was a fun movie that had great fight scenes and action. The writing was great and so was the character development. It made mention without forgetting Suicide Squad and it did a great job at introdusing new characters. There were some small issues throughout the movie but it does not ruin the experience. Go see it!!
